My first fast day was yesterday. Of course, I was a tad uptight about it but the bottom line was - it was easier than I thought it would be. I had decided to save my calories for dinner and the evening and besides a tall glass of iced coffee, that was all I had til dinner. Despite all my previous panic-driven, calorie-count researching and turning over every can, box, frozen item in my house to count the calories, I ended up cutting up veggies for soup at around 3 o'clock. The whole pot of soup added up to 170 calories! Carrots, leek, onion, kale, garlic, cilantro in chicken broth. With a sprinkle of grated parmesan, it was delicious and it did the trick. I had 3 coffee mugs of it and saved the one last mug-size portion in the fridge. I realize that I didn't really have to0 much of a problem with hunger pangs in my stomach - only in my mind, which I tried to occupy as much as possible. I did NOT wake up starving this morning even though I had 2 slices of toast with peanut butter for breakfast probably just because I "could". My next fasting day is Thursday and I am definitely not as apprehensive as I was about yesterday's. I hope this helps somebody else.
I'd love to hear somebody else's experience starting out if they'd like to share. How do you get through your fasting days? Do you cook or do you eat prepared frozen meals?

Thanks for sharing that stephie! I felt the same as you on my first fast day. A little nervous about it and wondered if I could actually get through the day. I really wanted this to work so I think that helped. However, I then discovered that it was not all that bad. I knew I needed to do some work on finding some good food substitutes to make my fast day easier because I want to keep this going and not give up....so that's what I set out to do. For me it's a simple breakfast of protein that keeps me less hungry till dinner. I scramble one whole egg and one egg white. The egg white is where all the protein is and it's only like 35 calories. So I have that with about 5 strawberries cut up and maybe a tablespoon of cottage cheese and coffee with 0 calorie "stevia" for sweetener. I generally have a cut up apple with a cup of tea for lunch. Then dinner is a 3oz piece of chicken breast with veggies and some sliced tomato or I sometimes eat a "CUP" of homemade soup with a very thin slice of Italian bread. I rarely go over the 500 calories. I've lost 8 lbs in 6 weeks. so far. I love this diet.

I saw the program yesterday, and started immideately. My first fast day is today.
Does the 5-2 program prefer 2 fasting days in a row, or can they just as well be separate? Which of these give the best results?

Where can I find a list of calorie content in different types of food?
Also, practical: How do I turn off the dark blue background color that shows when I write something? I can hardly see what I write.....

Hi I'm SAMM from Indianapolis,IN. I will be going back on the alternate day fasting soon. I was on it in 2013 for six months. I mostly was experimenting with what I like and don't like and what days worked and what days didn't. I feel that I need to be on the 4:3 till I reach a healthy weight. I am morbidly obese. I struggled with exercise in 2013, I lost 35 lbs. While fasting, but I went off the alternate day fasting for personal reason and now I at 260 lbs. Almost 50 years of age. The reason I'm joining this forum is because I was continually talking about it to friends and family that could care less.
So Hello. I'm SAMM I NOT STARVING! I Was dead set on not being very hungry while on the 5:2. My experience dieting has been if I'm starving I don't stick to it. So I'm watching Mosely's videos, and I understand that one day I fast and the next day I don't means that I can't ruin the diet, because it's more like a lifestyle. I struggled with the concept , because I'm an Eater with appetite. Food doesn't even have to be great. If I'm hungry enough I'll eat just about everything like a starving soldier.
I learned a few things. Since catfish and kidney beans are good for being sensitive for feeling full. I choose to eat those as my protein on fasting days. I eat at noon and 5pm on fasting days. Starting on Mondays. So if I fail I can still make 5:2 by Fridays. I choose to be 4:3 till I reach a healthy weight. Height Weight Range BMI Considered 5' 9" 124 lbs or less Below 18.5 Underweight 125 lbs to 168 lbs 18.5 to 24.9 Healthy weight 169 lbs to 202 lbs 25.0 to 29.9 Overweight 203 lbs or more 30 or higher Obese
When I told GP what I was doing I got the thumbs up. What I plan to do differently is exercise on fasting days. I usually get famished just after on fasting days if I exercise. So I'm choosing jump rope for Ten minutes. Then eating 250 or 350 calories. So I'll jump rope approximately 11:40 am then again 4:40pm and lastly just before I lay down to sleep for the night.
Another approach will be to approach 100% vitamin and mineral nutrition at each meal mostly organic instead of supplemental. I also drink vitamin enhanced water that is zero calorie...
Well that's me. I welcome comments, positive or negative.

I'm having trouble posting on this site. I can post I quick reply ,but creating new threads are difficult probably because I'm not on a pc. I have proven to myself I lose weight slowly with alternate day fasting approx 1-2 lbs a week yet long term 5lbs every 28 days. I proven I put it back on too . HA! What I wasn't doing was exercise , mainly due chronic pain of shoulder and foot after a a car crash. I'm back to being able to jump rope and walk in park, and lift weights. Treadmill type repetitive exercise doesn't appeal to me. I should however get enough from jump rope on fasting days and build muscle on exercise days "non fasting days".

I can't find the eat, fast, live longer tv program on direct tv. Seems it could be a great fund raiser. For public television. For donations to the stations you could get the books.
